Feel the heat, feel this history: Cyprus

Holidays in Cyprus can take many forms, for the smart traveller.  Sun, sand, and summer breezes certainly abound, and here they come in legendary measure.  For depth of colour and landscape and view, it can even be argued that Cypriots offer the world among the best of all possible experiences.

Likewise, it is true that the historian and archaeologist will find more than adequate accommodation.  The island’s very name, derived from the Greek for “copper,” points to the era preceding the Bronze Age.  Some of the earliest activities in recorded civilisation occurred here, and throughout Cyprus has served as a crossroads of culture and mass movement.  Even in 2012, the divisions are evident in the notorious Green Line dividing the Turkish North from the Greek South.

In fact, a walk along this Green Line, owing to a recent, more relaxed mood between the two sides of the island, is a highly recommended initial activity for the foreign tourist.  Whatever stood there prior to the break is frozen in time, recalling the dilapidated buildings and hastily forgotten lives once witnessed along the Berlin Wall.

For sun and sea, heading to any coastline on the island will make for an exceptional experience, but there are spots worth special attention. Petra tou Romiou, or Aphrodite’s Rock and Beach, combines a splendid view for sunsets with some of the best swimming.  The local eateries are excellent, though a picnic suits the mood of the place far better (and is certainly more cost-effective).

Another excellent site in the Lemesos region is Governor’s Beach, where the dark sand contrasts interestingly with the chalk cliffs behind, and where many beach parties are had throughout the summer months.

For unusual historical flair, try any of the ancient copper mines.  A formal tour will definitely be worth the nominal cost, and reading ancient graffiti will also provide an extraordinary point of view.  Museums, especially in Larnaca and Nicosia, also dot the landscape, as do churches, temples, and mosques.  Picking any era will yield a memorable site here.

This is only the beginning.  For sun, water, and deep history, there is Cyprus!
